Mussoorie Bike Trip Guide: Route, Costs & Corners

The classic hill run done right, hairpin etiquette, parking reality, and a full cost breakdown.

Every Dehradun rider does this trip eventually, 33 km, a kilometre of vertical, and the most famous hill station road in Uttarakhand. Done right it's the best ₹700 you'll spend this month. Done casually it's how rental scooters get scratched. Here's the done-right version.

The route

Dehradun → Rajpur Road → the toll gate where the climb begins → ~30 hairpins → Mussoorie Mall Road area. From Bidholi, cut across to Rajpur Road via the city (~40 min) then climb (~50 min). The road is well surfaced; the challenge is geometry and traffic, not potholes.

Which machine

RideDay rateOn the climb
Access 125 / Ntorq₹700Manages fine solo; buzzy two-up on the steepest thirds
Burgman Street₹800The comfort pick, relaxed two-up, wind protection, big seat
Bullet 350₹1,200Torque exactly where hairpins want it; the experience pick

The RE vs Burgman comparison settles the eternal debate properly.

Hairpin etiquette (memorise this)

Parking reality

Mall Road is pedestrianised for stretches and traffic-policed everywhere. Use the paid two-wheeler stands near the Picture Palace or Library ends (~₹50–100) and walk, it's the point of Mall Road anyway. Don't freelance-park; towing here is efficient.

Worth bolting on

Kempty Falls (~15 km past, touristy but the ride is lovely), George Everest House (~6 km, the best view-to-effort ratio on the mountain), Landour (the quiet, deodar-and-bakeries Mussoorie above Mussoorie, go before 5pm).

The budget

Rental ₹700–1,200 + fuel ~₹150 + parking ~₹75 + momos-to-maggi budget. Split a Burgman two ways and the whole mountain costs less than a movie night. Book the evening before on live listings, weekend mornings clear the fleet, and run the pickup checklist with extra care on brakes. This road grades your brakes, not your horsepower.

FAQs

Is the Mussoorie road hard to ride?

It's not hard, it's unforgiving of casualness: ~30 hairpins where buses take the full lane and gravel collects post-rain. Competent riders on 125cc scooters do it daily. Ride sober-alert, engine-brake downhill, and it's a joy.

What's the total cost of a Mussoorie day trip?

Rental ₹700–1,200 (scooter vs Bullet) + ~₹150 fuel + ~₹50–100 two-wheeler parking + food. Two people on one Burgman: about ₹600 a head for a full mountain day.

When should I NOT ride to Mussoorie?

Active monsoon rain (gravel + zero grip on corners), December–January before ~9am (fog you can't out-slow), and any day you'd be descending after dark. Otherwise, October–November and February–April are perfection.
