Ask five Dehradun rental shops about deposits and you'll hear five systems: ₹500 cash, ₹2,000 refundable-later, "leave your Aadhaar", "leave your college ID", or a shrug. This post explains what the deposit is actually for, where it goes wrong, and the model Rentie replaced it with.
What the deposit is really solving
The shop's fear list: the vehicle comes back damaged; it doesn't come back at all; the customer no-shows after a hold; the fare goes unpaid. All real risks, small fleets die of them. The deposit is risk transfer. The question is who carries the friction.
Where classic deposits go wrong
| Practice | The failure mode |
|---|---|
| Large cash deposit (₹500–2,000) | Return-time "damage" debates with your money already in their drawer; refunds that take "come tomorrow" |
| Original Aadhaar/DL held | Your legal identity sits in a drawer you don't control, loss, misuse, and leverage you can't argue with |
| Undocumented terms | Whatever was "agreed" becomes whatever the counter remembers |
The Rentie model, piece by piece
- Advance = fare, not deposit. Each shop sets its own advance amount, it reserves the vehicle, and it becomes the first part of what you'd pay anyway. Nothing sits waiting to be refunded, so nothing can be refunded slowly.
- On the record. Captured via Razorpay against a booking reference, provable by either side, disputable by neither.
- Damage handled where it belongs. The joint pickup inspection (photograph everything, the checklist) plus joint return assessment, per the rental policy. Damage costs are a conversation with evidence, not a deduction from a hostage sum.
- ID stays yours. Shops may keep a photocopy during the ride (documents policy); originals stay in your pocket.
- No-shows solved differently. The advance means an abandoned booking isn't free, which is exactly the protection shops wanted deposits for, without holding your money hostage.
Questions to ask any rental, anywhere
- "Is the advance part of the fare, or held separately?" (Separate = ask when and how it returns, in writing.)
- "Photocopy or original?" (Original = no.)
- "What's the damage process at return?" (No inspection at pickup = the process is 'you lose'.)
- "Where's my receipt?" (On Rentie: WhatsApp, automatically. Full money rules: Refund & Cancellation.)
